From Pulpit to Pocket: The Shameful Silence of Nigeria's Religious Leaders in the Face of Government Failure.
In 2015, a familiar narrative unfolded in Nigerian politics. A powerful politician, now in the seat of power, used a popular pastor to sway the masses against the then president, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Pastor Oyadepo (Daddy GO), of the Chosen Christian Church, was instrumental in convincing his followers that Jonathan was evil and didn't deserve a second term. Fast forward to today, and the same politician, now President Tinubu, is facing criticism for his performance. However, instead of speaking out against the government's failures, Daddy GO is asking his followers to pray for Nigeria an Nigeria d its leaders.
This hypocrisy is not lost on Nigerians, who are now taking to social media to express their disappointment and frustration. As one Twitter user put it, You helped Buhari stitch the mask that he wore in 2015, Are you going to help undo the damage or would you just keep doing the prayer walks? Another user questioned the pastor's motives, saying, I get amazed by these so-called pastors whose god is in their belly.... Where did they get all these practices of prayer from that they throw around?
The silence of Daddy GO, and his ilk is deafening. Where is the prophetic voice that once rang out against perceived injustices? Has the pursuit of power and wealth silenced the church? Nigerians are watching, and they will not forget.
The church's role in shaping public opinion is significant. When religious leaders prioritize politics over principles, the faithful are left confused and disillusioned. As one social media user aptly put it, Not worthy to be called a true pastor..a hypocritic Man... Wonder the kind of humans attends his church.. Hypocrites.
In a democracy, accountability is crucial. When those in power fail to deliver, they must be held accountable. The church's silence is not only a betrayal of its followers but also a disservice to the nation. As Nigerians continue to suffer, Daddy GO, and his fellow pastors must answer to God and the people. Will they continue to pray for the nation, or will they find their voice to speak truth to power?
